Fahrenheit 451 Growing Up Online Brick
“ An hour of TV class, an hour of basketball or baseball or running, another hour of transcription history or painting pictures, and more sports, but do you know, we never ask questions, or at least most don’t; they just run the answers at you, bing, bing, bing, and us sitting there for four more hours of film teacher.” Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451
This summer you will read Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451. The book explicitly focuses on the burning of books, but underlying themes explore, in particular the effects of media and the power of governmental control over a society.
As you read you should annotate your book and keep track of:
References to Media
References to Work
References to Governmental Control
Keep a list of allusions (note many are to authors, philosophers, famous characters…..)
Use the space at the front and back of your book to keep track of your notations.
Write something at the top of every second page. It may be a personal response question, a comment on the story or an observation about language. Please keep track of all the ideas that you have as you read. Fill the margins. Use post-its. Your book should be worn with love, use and analysis when you arrive back to school in August.
After reading you should complete the following:
